Historical Video Series (Kawabe Sensei)

Shigeru Kawabe Sensei

I have started moving a lot of my vhs tapes that I took or got tapes of in Japan. I will try to post some of the Aikido teachers. There is so much out there we can appreciate and learn from their technique and attitude.

This below video is of Shigeru Kawabe Sensei had his dojo in Akita Japan. I had the opportunity to travel to his dojo and train with him in the late 90’s. Inside of his short stocky frame his Aikido is direct, powerful, and a lot of fun to watch.  Here is a short video of a demo he was part of.

Thank you for sharing this video. It must have been an incredible experience training with Kawabe Sensei.

As someone who’s not very far on this journey, there’s so much for me to absorb from this clip. From trying to discern how he does different techniques and being aware of his zanshin throughout, to his uke’s attacks and ukemi, there’s a lot I can learn from this.

I wonder if others are drawn to different things depending where they are on their Aikido path? If anyone wants to share what strikes them particularly strongly, I’d find it interesting.

I’d enjoy seeing more videos if possible.

I am in the process of moving most of my old videos off of vhs. I will get up more coming soon.

Andrew San,
I’ve been exploring the Bamboo Grove and came across this clip. It brought back memories of the seminar from the old days when Kawabe Sensei joined Saito Shihan for the trip. My basic sense memory of Kawabe Sensei was that of immense and yet very compact power. This clip brought that memory to the surface. Thank you for the clip….and in the event I have not mentioned it in awhile, thank you for all your patient instruction back then.

It is always glad to hear from you again. You are right about Kawabe sensei. I have had the pleasure of getting my bell rung by him in the past and amazing the power he contained in his smaller (yet stalky) body type.

I hope you continue your Aikido journey as you started so strong and with great intention. It was a pleasure working with you in the past, and don’t hesitate to look my and the dojo up if you come to Denver anytime. Talk to you later.
